What is in an E-cig?

The beauty of an electronic cigarette is its LACK of ingredients—it is purely based on the most important components that make a great tobacco cigarette alternative, and nothing more. So let’s go through the components:

Propylene Glycol

Formed when propylene oxide and water are reacted, propylene glycol is an organic compound used in E-cigs to produce vapor. Once ingested into the human body, it is metabolized into pyruvic acid, a chemical intermediate derived from glucose that is used in Krebs cycle to produce energy.

Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is a carbohydrate derived from plant oils. It is used in combination with or as a substitute for propylene glycol to create the vapors inhaled when using an E-cig. It has been broadly used as a sweetener because it is metabolized differently from sugar and does not elevate blood sugar levels or contribute to bacterial tooth decay.

Vegetable glycerin is also used in laxatives, in topical creams for psoriasis, rashes, burns, bedsores, and cuts, and in the treatment of gum disease as it kills associated bacterial colonies. Much like propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin is exceptionally safe.


Nicotine is commonly referred to as unhealthy but, to what extent does this apply? At doses of 50mg and higher, nicotine can cause respiratory failure and paralysis. Smaller amounts can cause nausea, dizziness, lowered blood pressure, and heart palpitations. This may sound a little frightening, but don’t fret.

A smoker inhales approximately 3mg of nicotine per cigarette; at this concentration, nicotine merely constricts blood vessels, increases the heart rate, and confers a feeling of well-being and alertness on the smoker by increasing the flow of dopamine, a neurotransmitter. In addition, nicotine has been scientifically proven to be a non-carcinogenic substance.
